Control (2018) combines sculpture, endurance performance, and text to create an immersive installation that explores the complexities of mental health and the concept of control.
Central to the work was a hospital bedsheet, intricately embroidered with the daily thoughts on the experience of losing control during an emergency relapse hospital admission the artist found herself in the during the final term of university. The bedsheet was suspended to reveal both its front and back, symbolising the conscious and subconscious aspects of control.
Accompanying the bedsheet are towering, mountain-like forms created from 586 nails, meticulously woven and knotted with embroidery thread over the course of two weeks. These structures serve as a metaphor for the tension between the harsh realities of mental health struggles in contemporary society and the yearning for an idyllic sanctuary, represented here by the artist’s love of the serene landscapes of the Lake District.
