Can We Talk (Purple Flowers), 2021-present, is a deeply personal exploration of strength, patience, and resilience in the face of depression and suicide. The purple flowers symbolise lives saved, while white flowers honor those we have lost. Together, they tell a story of survival and remembrance.
These works celebrate the small, yet powerful, “purple miracles”—flowers growing through concrete and rail tracks—symbolising resilience and the ability to thrive even in the harshest conditions. By picking, pressing, and preserving these flowers, they become lasting symbols of nostalgia, recovery, and growth. When displayed together, they illustrate the intertwined strength of humanity and nature to endure and flourish through even the darkest moments.
During a personal mental health crisis, Amelia found solace and a lifeline in these flowers. This simple act of noticing became her way back to reality, offering a distraction from the suicidal ideations that ultimately helped her begin to heal.
These works are dedicated to the friendships and connections that support us, honoring both those we love and those we have lost.
